A New Nature Recovery Project for the River Axe Catchment
We’re excited to announce that Rivers Run Through Us, a new project aimed at improving the health of the River Axe and its catchment, has been given the green light. Thanks to a grant of over £250,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund (made possible by National Lottery players) and an additional £60,000 from the Environment Agency’s Water Environment Improvement Fund, the project will begin in early 2025.
A Collaborative Approach to River Restoration
Led by Blackdown Hills National Landscape in partnership with Dorset and East Devon National Landscapes, Rivers Run Through Us will focus on restoring the River Axe, its tributaries, and the surrounding valleys. The project aims to reconnect local communities with the river’s heritage while tackling the pressing environmental challenges the river has faced in recent years. It also benefits from additional funding and collaboration with the Upper Axe Landscape Recovery Project and other key partners. Historically, the River Axe was celebrated for its clean waters and thriving trout streams. However, significant environmental challenges in recent years have impacted its health and biodiversity. This project takes a holistic and collaborative approach to address these issues, helping reconnect people and communities with the river and its heritage.

A Project with People and Nature at Its Heart
The initiative will focus on three key areas:
- Water: Improving river health by monitoring its condition and tackling pollution.
- Soil: Supporting farmers and land managers to restore soils and safeguard natural resources.
- People: Engaging communities in hands-on conservation, citizen science, and new educational programs to foster a deeper connection with the river’s heritage.
Working alongside farmers, schools, community groups, and a wider network of partners—including the Upper Axe Landscape Recovery Project and Chardstock Ecogroup—the project will pilot new activities and develop action plans to improve key habitats and species in the River Axe catchment.
