This October, Blackdown Hills National Landscape and East Devon National Landscape invite members of the public to experience The Work of Giants! at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery, Honiton.

This immersive art installation invites audiences to step into a world of myth, mystery, and ancient landscapes – reimagining the forces that shaped East Devon and the Blackdown Hills.

Created by Four of Swords, one of the South West’s most experienced immersive theatre companies, the project uses film, sound, and storytelling to reimagine the monumental sites of East Devon and the Blackdown Hills – and the giants who might once have built them.

The installation is part of Nature Calling, a national arts programme funded by Arts Council England. Locally, the project has been led by Blackdown Hills National Landscape and East Devon National Landscape. It has been shaped by the voices of the community, with Year 8 students from Honiton Community College and members of Dementia Friendly Honiton. Participants have taken part in a series of workshops alongside field trips to Blackbury Camp. Through storytelling, sensory activities, sound, photography, collage, writing, and performance, they explored the landscapes in creative and meaningful ways, inspired by the Old English phrase Enta Geweorc – “The Work of Giants.”

Clare Groom, Communications Officer for Blackdown Hills National Landscape, said: “This work demonstrates how the natural world can act as a catalyst for creativity and connection, helping the participants to engage with their local landscapes and with each other.”

Steph Aburrow, Project Officer for East Devon National Landscape, added: “By bringing together artists, musicians, students and members of the Dementia Friendly Honiton, we’ve created something that not only celebrates our ancient landscapes, but also the people who live alongside them today. I encourage everyone to head to the Thelma Hulbert Gallery to experience an informative and immersive installation.”

David Turner, Head of CreATE and Music Teacher at Honiton Community College said: “The Year 8 students involved in the project from Honiton Community College have gained a huge amount from this experience and have thoroughly enjoyed the creative process and working with the artists.”

The installation will be open to the public at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery from Saturday 11 October to Friday 31 October, open Tuesday to Saturday 10am – 5pm.

The initiative, which is taking place in National Landscapes throughout the country, celebrates the beauty, history, and cultural significance of our landscapes – offering new ways for people to connect with nature and the places that shape their lives.
