We are excited to announce the launch of “Connecting Coast and Country,” a new project designed to bring the dramatic East Devon coastline and our rolling countryside closer together.

Made possible by a £9,995 grant from National Trails UK (NTUK), the project is exploring the creation of three new promoted routes linking the iconic South West Coast Path with the East Devon Way.

But the goal isn’t just to draw lines on a map – we want to create routes that work for everyone. The project aims to integrate human and ecological needs, ensuring the paths are accessible and enjoyable while also providing a vital boost for local wildlife.

Through the project, we will identify opportunities to restore and expand a mosaic of sunny, flower-rich meadows and coastal scrub to help these species thrive. This work supports the Devon Local Nature Recovery Strategy, ensuring that as we connect our paths, we are also connecting habitats.

Looking inland, we are extending our focus to woodlands, hedgerows, and field edges. Improved management of these areas will help to create a seamless network that supports the key species found on the East Devon National Landscape Special Species list.

We want local communities to be at the heart of this project. Over the coming months, we will be working to understand how you currently use, would like to use, spaces.

The Timeline:

  • Late 2025: We are currently on the ground, exploring the feasibility of different paths and drafting potential routes.
  • Early 2026: We’re inviting you to get involved! We’re heading out to communities near the proposed routes and getting feedback and ideas from potential users.
  • March 2026: We will bring it all together. By collating the data, mapping nature interventions, and estimating costs, we will create a blueprint” for the delivery stage.
