Celebrating Our Heritage: Railway Schools Pack Launched

We are delighted to announce the launch of ‘Tracks Through Time’, a new educational resource designed to bring the unique history of the East Devon landscape directly into the classroom.

Developed by the Axminster-based charity For the Love of a Railway with support from East Devon National Landscape, this comprehensive schools pack is designed to help Key Stage 2 pupils engage the fascinating story of the local railway and how transport shaped local communities, tourism and everyday life. Although the Axminster to Lyme Regis line closed in 1965, its legacy still provides rich learning opportunities across a wide span of the national curriculum.

The former Axminster to Lyme Regis railway line is a vital part of our local story. By supporting this project, we aim to help young people understand how the dramatic, steep terrain of East Devon shaped the ingenuity of the past.

‘Tracks Through Time’ allows students to explore:

  • History and Transport – how the railway changed local life and created new opportunities
  • Geography – understanding how engineers overcome the huge challenges of building a line through the steep terrain between Axminster and Lyme Regis
  • Art and Creativity – observational drawing and poster design inspired by railway heritage
  • English and Drama – storytelling, diary writing and role play linked to railway life
  • Economy and Tourism – how transport links helped Lyme Regis grow and prosper

Through our contribution, we have helped transform years of dedicated local research into a structured, curriculum-linked resource. This ensures that the legacy of the “magical” railway remains accessible to the next generation of environmental and historical stewards.

Barrie Hedges of For the Love of a Railway said: “The remarkable story of the line provides rare opportunities to incorporate real local material into the national curriculum. We are extremely grateful to East Devon National Landscape for its support in helping us develop the resource and make it available to schools.”

Download the pack and plan a visit

In addition to the digital pack, schools are encouraged to bridge the gap between the classroom and the landscape by visiting the ‘Depot’ visitor centre in Axminster. There, pupils can view a meticulous model of the line, seeing first-hand how the railway once carved its path through our beautiful countryside

Teachers and educators can download the ‘Tracks Through Time’ pack or enquire about visits on their dedicated website.
