Harpford Woods

Nestled between the villages of Newton Poppleford and Harpford, Harpford Woods is one of East Devon’s most atmospheric woodland escapes.

The woods are famously bisected by the track of the disused Sidmouth Railway. Walking along this flat, elevated route feels like stepping back into the Victorian era, as you pass under moss-covered brick bridges and through a historic tunnel.

In spring, the woodland floor is a carpet of bluebells and primroses. Keep an eye out for roe deer in the early morning, and listen for the distinctive drumming of Great Spotted Woodpeckers among the majestic stands of beech and pine.

This site is owned and managed by Clinton Devon Estates.

East Devon Way

A significant section of the East Devon Way (the 40-mile long-distance trail) winds through the heart of the woods, connecting the lush valley floor with the panoramic heights of Fire Beacon Hill. Find out more about the East Devon Way.
