This location is split between a woodland, managed by Forestry England, and a heathland, managed by East Devon District Council Countryside team, as a Local Nature Reserve.
We are working with landowners to make the sites more accessible for people to enjoy them year round whilst also minimising disturbance to wildlife. In Spring 2026, you will see the installation of a boardwalk in the heathland site getting you over some muddy sections – thanks to our Access for All fund.
There is a small network of bridleways through the woodland, heathland and quiet village lanes that can be enjoyed. Follow the waymarking disc’s and wooden fingerposts indicating where the bridleways go.
No refreshments available.
Entrance on the woodland site starts with wide, graveled forest tracks with a slight slope downwards. The further you go into the site, it becomes less managed and paths have tree roots and muddy sections during heavy rainfall. Paths are generally okay in dry weather during the summer.
Buses run to Hunters Lodge at Raymond’s Hill – the nature reserves is 1/2 a mile from here along a relatively quiet but fast moving road.
Latest public transport availability can be planned via Traveline’s website.
You have two options:
Welcome under close control.
No toilets, though Lyme Regis is a 10 minute drive.
The heathland is alive with wildlife including heather, adders, and nightjars. Once vital for grazing and fuel, heathland is now a rare habitat which is being restored to protect rare wildlife and reconnect people with this historic landscape.
The reserve is a designated Dark Skies Discovery Site status, making it an excellent location for stargazing.
